History of the John Drew Family - Hodges Family Genealogy

(What follows is a binder of genealogy information starting with John Drew and Catherine Smith and moving on to their descendants in the US. I have incorporated the corrections added to it on sleeved inserts. This document came to my father's possession after being created by Alice Drew Lockwood (thank you to my Aunt Sally for knowing this). As these are typed, I will not be including pictures of the original document. Note that the last few pages, particularly with generation 6 seem to have a lot of inconsistencies. I have fixed some obvious mistakes in generation numbering but for the most part left the document as-is.) --- # HISTORY OF THE JOHN DREW FAMILY IN ENGLAND 1780 - 1869 ## Generation I John Drew and Catherine Smith were married at the Forest of Dean, Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England (1804). They had several children: John, James, Absalom, Fanny, Catherine, Susan, and Sarah. John Drew has a pottery business in the forest of Dean. Catherine Smith Drew wrote poetry about her beloved Forest of Dean. In 1845 some verses were published to please her friends who were devoted to the forest. A memorial service was held for her one hundred years after her death in the Forest of Dean. She was a highly respected, devoted citizen of the Forest of Dean, Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England. Catherine Smith Drew was born 1784, died (?). John Drew was born 1780, died (?). They are buried in the Drew family plot in St. John's Churchyard in Cinderford. The children of this marriage were buried in England except for Absalom. He went to America in 1869. # HISTORY OF THE DREW FAMILY IN AMERICA 1869-1973 ## Generation II Absalom Drew, son of Catherine Smith Drew and John Drew, married Elizabeth Morgan in Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England in 1844. They had ten children, three died in infancy. Jane Drew born 1845 died 1930. Sarah Drew born 1847 died 1881. David born 1849, was drowned in 1870. Absalom Drew was born 1853 died 1920. Lucy Drew born 1855 died 1928. Eliza Drew born 1861 died 1958. Mary Ann Drew born 1863 died 1934. Elizabeth Morgan died 1867. She is buried at St. John's Churchyard, Cinderford, England. Absalom Drew Married Mary Rider 1869 in Cinderford, England. They came to America in 1869 and settled in Westfield, Massachusetts. They brought David, Absalom, Lucy, Eliza and Mary Ann with them. Absalom Drew established a grist mill at little River, Westfield, Massachusetts. His sons David and Absalom helped their father in the work of the mill. David married and had a son who died in infancy. David was drowned shorty after his son's birth. Absalom Drew born in England (1820) died in Westfield, Massachusetts (1879). Mary Rider Drew born in England (1819) died in Agawam, Massachusetts (1906). Absalom, David, Mary Rider Drew are buried at Own District Cemetery, Westfield, Massachusetts. ## Generation III (1) Jane Drew daughter of Elizabeth Morgan and Absalom Drew, married Henry Jabez Hodges, Gloucestershire England in 1869. They had six children. Henry Davis Hodges born 1869, died 1875 in England. Ceil Stanley Hodges born 1875, died 1877. Mary Elizabeth Hodges born 1878, died in England in 1881. Howard Percy Hodges born 1872, died 1932 in England. William Bruce born 1876, died 1929 in England. Herbert Murray born 1880, died 1960 in England. Percy Hodges and William Hodges were not married. Herbert Murray Hodges married Jessie Burt, daughter of an English army officer at St. Andrews Church, Singapore, Malay Peninsula in 1910. Jessie Burt Hodges lives at West Clandon, Surrey, England. Harry Hodges, Cecil Hodges, and Elizabeth Hodges are buried at Littledean, Gloucestershire, England. Jane Drew Hodges and Jabez Hodges are buried in the Bispham Churchyard, Lancaster, England. William Henry and Herbert Hodges are buried in the Bispham Churchyard with their parents. (2) Sarah Drew daughter of Elizabeth Morgan and Absalom Drew married William Henry Hodges of Littledean, Gloucestershire, England. They had five children: Lillian 1869-1948, Violette Ethel Hodges 1870-1953, Harley 1874-1948, Vernon 1876-1943, Lota 1880-1901. Sarah Drew Hodges born 1847, died 1881 at Littledean, England. William Hodges died 1886 at Littledean, buried in Family plot. (3) David son of Elizabeth Morgan and Absalom Drew died in Westfield Massachusetts in 1870 and was buried at Owen District Cemetery besides his father Absalom Drew. (4) Absalom son of Elizabeth Morgan and Absalom Drew married Mary Cable at Westfield, Massachusetts in 1872. They had six children William 1873-1946, Thomas 1875-1939, Bessie 1878-1900, Fred born in 1881, Alice Jane born in 1885, Sarah 1887-1969. Absalom and his wife Mary Drew are buried in the family plot, Owen District Cemetery, Westfield, Massachusetts. Absalom Drew died in Agawam, Massachusetts in 1920. Mary Drew died at Springfield, Massachusetts in 1925. (5) Lucy Drew daughter of Absalom and Elizabeth Morgan Drew married John Williams at Westfield, Massachusetts. They had 5 children. Elizabeth, Benjamin, Lucy 1874-1955, Robert, Elizabeth born in 1895. The children of Lucy and John Williams are buried with their parents in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Massachusetts. (6) Eliza Drew daughter of Absalom and Elizabeth Morgan Drew married Charles Bill at New Haven in 1875. They had four sons: Twin sons died at birth, Charles Lewis Bill 1877-1964, Harry Leon Bill 1881-1952 (died in Holland). Eliza and Charles Bill were buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield Mass. Charles Bill died in Syracuse, New York in 1933 and Eliza Bill died at Bridgeport Connecticut in 1958. (7) Mary Ann Drew daughter of Absalom and Elizabeth Morgan Drew married Eben Heaten Pardee at Westfield Mass. They had three children: Carlotta 1882-1954, Raymond 1891-1950, Elizabeth 1904-. Mary Ann Pardee died in 1934 at Gardner Massachusetts. Eben Pardee died in 1942 at Gardner Mass. They are buried in their family plot at Pine Hill Cemetery Westfield, Massachusetts. ## Generation IV ### (children of Sarah Drew and William Hodges came to America in 1886) (1) Lillian Hodges, daughter of Sarah and William Hodges (1869-1948) married Reuben Stiles Fox at Westfield Massachusetts. They had seven children, three of which died in infancy: Elizabeth 1889-1942, Helen 1891-1968, Ruth 1894-1944, Ralph 1903-1956. Lillian Hodges Fox died at Washington D.C. in 1948. Reuben Fox died at Jackson Michigan in 1915. They are buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield Massachusetts. (2) Violette Hodges, daughter of Sarah and William Hodges (1870-1953), married Clayton James Curtiss in New Haven in 1896. They had four children: Ruth 1897-1929, Albert 1899-1901, Richmond 1907-?, Lota 1912-?. Clayton Curtiss died 1938, and Violette Curtiss died in 1953. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven Conn. (3) Harley Hodges, son of Sarah and William Hodges, (1874-1952), married Alice Smith at West Haven Conn. They had one child: Lois 1900-?. Alice Smith Hodges died in 1948 at New Haven. Harley Hodges died in 1952 at West Haven. They are buried at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven Conn. (4) Vernon Hodges, son of Sarah and William Hodges (1876-1943), married Theresa Peck in New Haven in 1899. They had two children: Doris 1902-1907, Sarah Vernon Hodges 1904-1957. Vernon Hodges died in New Haven in 1943. Theresa Peck Hodges died in New Haven in 1972. They are buried with their two children at Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven Conn. (5) Lota Hodges, daughter of Sarah and William Hodges, (1880-1901), unmarried. Buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield Mass. ### (children of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew) (1) William Drew - son of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew, (1873-1946), married Eva Blauehard in Holyoke Mass. No children. Eva died in 1906. William Drew died in 1946 and is buried in Agawan Center Cemetery, Mass. (2) Thomas Drew - son of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew (1875-1939) married Hattie Dady at South Lampton, Mass. They had one son, Dwight Drew Jr. Hattie died at West Springfield. Thomas Drew also died at West Springfield Mass. in 1939. He and his wife are buried at Southampton Mass. (3) Bessie Drew - daughter of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew (18??-1900), married Horace Pease in 1895. She is buried in Ringville Cemetery Mass. with her husband. Their only child died at birth. (4) Fred Drew - son of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew, married Cora Decorie at Agawam, Mass. They had two children: Alice born in 1906 and Fred Jr. who was born in 1908. Cora Drew died in 1958 and was buried in St. Michael Cemetery Springfield. (5) Alice Jane daughter of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew, married Frederick Lockwood at Stanford Conn. in 1919. Frederick Lockwood died in 1966 and was buried at Riverside cemetery, Norwalk Conn. (6) Sarah - daughter of Mary Cable and Absolom Drew, married Walter Ballard at Springfield Mass. in 1906. They had one child: Madeline born in 1909. Sarah Drew Ballard died in 1968 in Springfield Mass. She is buried at Hill Crest Cemetery Springfield Mass. beside her daughter Madeline Ballard Krause. ### (children of Lucy and John Williams) (1) Elizabeth Drew Williams - daughter of Lucy and John Williams married and died without issue in 18?? buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield Massachusetts. (2) Benjamin Williams - son of Lucy and John Williams, married Cora Bates at Westfield Mass. They had two sons - they died - Benjamin Williams died in New York 19--. (3) Lucy Williams - daughter of Lucy and John Williams married John Cosby at Westfield Mass in 1895. They had three children - Virginia born 1903 - Rachel born 1905 - Ressell born 1907. Lucy Cosby died 1955 - John Cosby died 1960. They are buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield Massachusetts. (4) Robert Williams - son of Lucy and John Williams married Florence Griggs at Westfield Mass. - No issue. Robert Williams died 19??., buried at Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Mass. (5) Eliza Williams - daughter of Lucy and John Williams married Adlar Beadore 1917 Charlemont Mass. They had two sons - Robert Luther Beadore born 1915 and Adlar John Beadore born 1918. ### (children of Eliza Drew and Charles Bill) (1) Charles Lewis Bill - son of Eliza Drew and Charles Bill married Grace Monson, New Haven. They had one son Harthon Lewis Bill born 1910. Grace Bill died 1926 - buried ?. Charles Lewis Bill married Mary Novak 1933. They had two children, Lewis Drew Bill born 1934 and Mary Lew born 1937. Charles Lewis Bill died at Bridgeport, Conn 1964, buried at Bridgeport, Connecticut. (2) Harry Leon Bill - son of Eliza and Charles Bill - married Beulah Welch Russell at New Haven. They had one son, Russell W. Bill born 1904. Beulah died in 1916 - buried Dayton Ohio. Harry Leon Bill married Clare Cooney. They had one son H.L. Bill Jr. 1919. Harry L. Bill Sr. died suddenly in Holland 1952. Buried at Green River Cemetery, Greenfield, Mass. Clare Bill resides in Greenfield, Mass. ### (children of Mary Ann and Eben Pardee) (1) Carlotta Pardee, daughter of Mary Ann and Eben Pardee. Married Edward Rice 1909. They had two sons Eben born 1910, David born 1911, Carlotta born 1882-died 1954 in Gradner Mass. Edward Rice born 1899 died 1956. They are buried at Charlemont, Mass. (2) Raymond Pardee, son of Mary Ann and Eben Pardee, married Mary Jensen at Mindale 1916. They had three children, Mary born 1917, Eben born 1918, Laura born 1919. Raymond died 1950 - buried at ? (3) Elizabeth Pardee - daughter of Mary Ann and Eben Pardee married Chester Varnum at Gardner Mass. No issue. Chester died 1958 - Elizabeth P. Varnum married Harry Usher 1965 - No issue. They live in Sarasota, Florida. ## Generation V ### (children of Lillian and Reuben Fox) (1) Elizabeth Fox - daughter of Lillian and Reuben Fox married Richard Fox at Michigan in 1913. They had one child - Lota - born 1915. Richard Fox died 1916. Elizabeth Fox married Louis Sucher in California 1938. She died 1942 - buried at San Diego, California. (2) Helen Fox daughter of Lillian and Reuben Fox married Bernard Smart 1927 at Washington D.C. - No issue. Bernard Smart Died 1946, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Helen died 1964, buried beside her hsuband at Arlington National Cemetery, Va. (3) Ruth Fox daughter of Lillian and Reuben Fox married John Mitchell 1919. They had four children. John Reuben born 1921. Frank David born 1924. Thomas Leonard born 1918 and William Richard born 1935. Ruth died 1944. She is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, Westfield, Mass. (4) Ralph Fox - son of Lillian and Reuben Fox married Margaret Burger. No issue. Ralph married Dorothy Brightwell. No issue. Ralph Fox died 1956. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery Va. ### (children of Violette and Clayton Curtiss) (1) Ruth Curtiss - daughter of Violette and Clayton Curtiss married Howard Donovan - no issue. Ruth died 1929 - buried at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, Conn. (2) Albert Hodges Curtiss - son of Violette and Clayton Curtiss, born 1899 died 1901 - buried at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven, Conn. (3) Richmond Hodges Curtiss - son of Violette and Clayton Curtiss, married Sarah Walden, New Haven 1932. They had Four children, Richmond Jr. born 1932, Daniel born 1934, James born 1939, Sarah born 1941. Richmond and Sarah Curtiss live in Guilford, Connecticut. (4) Lota Winchell Curtiss daughter of Violette and Clayton Curtiss born 1912. Married Wilbur Emery Hogg 1947. No issue. They live at Albany, NY. ### (children of Thomas and Hattie Drew) (1) Dwight Drew - son of Thomas and Hattie Drew married Helena_____ They had three children, Dwight Jr. born ----, Margaret, born ---- Stuart born ----. Dwight Drew Sr. died 1971. ### (children of Sarah Drew and Walter Ballard) (1) Madeline Ballard daughter of Sarah Drew and Walter Ballard, married Edwin Krause 1931. No issue. Edwin Krause died 1964. Madeline died 1969. They are buried at Hill Crest Cemetery, Springfield, Massachusetts. ### (children of Cora and Fred Drew) (1) Fred Drew Jr. son of Cora and Fred Drew - married Mary Freeman 1944 at Springfield, Mass. They had one child, Patricia Alice, born 1946. They live in Agawan, Massachusetts. ### (children of Lucy Williams and John Cosby) (1) Virginia Cosby - daughter of Lucy Williams and John Cosby, married Charles Bowes, Charles died, Virginia married Theodore Fowler. He died. No issue of either marriage. Virginia Fowler lives in Northampton, Mass. (2) Rachel Cosby - daughter of Lucy and John Cosby married Deane Lent at Westfield, Mass. They had one son, Peter, born 1941. The Lents live in Cohasset, Massachusetts. (3) Russell Cosby - son of Lucy and John Cosby - married Mary_____ . No issue. They live in Westfield, Massachusetts. ### (children of Grace and Lewis Bill) (1) Harthon Lewis Bill - son of Grace and Lewis Bill - married Jane Haines in Pomfret, Connecticut 1935. They had one son Harthon Haines born at Los Angeles, California 1938. The Harthon Lewis Bills live at Babylon, Long Island. (2) Lewis Drew Bill Son of Mary and Charles Lewis Bill married Patricia Peck. They had two children Drucine Ann born 1956. Dwayne born ? Second marriage to Susan ? They had two children Erica born 1961 - Margaret born 1963. They live in Bridgeport, Conn. (3) Mary Lew Bill Daughter of Mary and Charles Lewis Bill married Byron de Graff 1956. They had three children Douglas born 1957 - John born 1958 James born 1960. They live in Shelton, Connecticut. ### (children of Harry L. Bill Sr.) (1) Russell W. Bill Son of Beulah and Harry L. Bill married Helen Giltner. They had two daughters - Susan born ? Melamne born ? Helen died ? and Russell Bill married ? (2) Harry L. Bill Jr. Son of Clare and Harry L. Bill Sr. Married Jane Cobb at Dayton, ohio. They had two daughters, Barbara born ? - Bonita born ? Harry L. Bill Jr. married Nancy Flynn. They had one daughter, Elizabeth born ? ### (children of Carlotta and Edward Rice) (1) Eben Rice Son of Carlotta and Edward Rice. Married Louise Blanchard, Bermuda 1942. They had one child. Cynthia born 1943. Eben Rice son of Carlotta and Edward Rice married Johanna Culbert in Reno, Nevada in 1958. They have two children, Rebecca, born 1968, Christopher born 1970. Louise Rice lives at Waben, Mass. Eben lives in New Hampshire. (2) David Rice - Son of Carlotta and Eben Rice married Eleanor Pearson at Gardner, Massachusetts 1937. They had two children. David born 1945, Elizabeth born 1948. They had two adopted sons. Jonathan born 1939, Kittredge born 1942. The David Rices' live at Gardner, Massachusetts. ### (children of Raymond and Mary Jensen Pardee) (1) Eben Pardee - Son of Raymond and Mary Jensen pardee Married ? They had two children, Carol born 1942, Janet born 1947. (2) Mary Pardee - Married Wilkensen. No issue. They live in California. (3) Laura Pardee - Daughter of Raymond and Mary Pardee. Married George Robach of Gardner, Mass. They have three sons. Philip born 1951. Charles born 1940. Eben born 1947. ## Generation VI ### (children of Richmond and Sarah Curtiss) (1) Richmond Hodges Curtiss Jr. Son of Richmond and Sarah Curtiss. Born 1932 in New Haven. Married Georgia Biddel 1938 at Pittsburgh Pa. They had three children, Margaret Luther born 1960. Richmond Hodges III born 1963. Thomas Riddell born 1966. They live in Saltsburg, Penn (2) Daniel Walden Curtiss - Son of Sarah and Richmond Curtiss. Born 1934 in New Haven. Married Sara Hawkins at Westfield, New Jersey 1962. They had two children, Dale born 1965. Grant Walden born 1968. They reside in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (3) Clayton James Curtiss II - son of Sarah and Richmond Curtiss, married Katherine Belden in 1961 in Newington, Connecticut. They have three children: Carolyn Hodges, born 1963, New Haven, Clayton James III, born 1964, New Haven, Connecticut, John Eliot, born 1968, Danbury, The Clayton James Curtiss reside at Newtown, Connecticut. (4) Sarah Scovill - daughter of Sarah and Richmond Curtiss. Born 1941 in New Haven. Married Charles Campbell in Guilford, Connecticut in 1968. They reside in New York. No issue. ### (children of Lois and Franklin Clark) (1) Jane Hodges Clark, daughter of Lois and Franklin Clark. Married Ralph Hemingway, West Haven, Connecticut 1953. They had four children, Ralph III, born 1955; Alice born 1958; Clark born 1964 and William born 1966. ### (children of Sarah Vernon Hodges and Leonard M. Barker) (1) Peter Hodges Son of Sarah Vernon Hodges and Leonard M. Barker, married Rita Pinsky, New York 1952. They have three children: Jonathan born 1958, Sarah born 1960 and Elizabeth born 1962. They reside in East Northport, Long Island, New York. ### (children of Helena and Dwight Drew) (1) Dwight Drew Jr. Son of Helena and Dwight Drew, married and had one child, second marriage. (2) Margaret Drew - daughter of Helena and Dwight Drew married Donald Hickey, Springfield, Massachusetts. They have five children: Kathleen born 1951; Donald Jr. 1952; Karen born 1955. David born, 1953 and Kathryn born 1957. The Donald Hickey's reside in Chicopee, Massachusetts. (3) Stuart, son of Helena and Dwight Drew, married Carolyn____ They have one son Michael born in California. Stuart and Carolyn live in New Hampshire. ### (children of Mary and Fred Drew) (1) Patricia Alice Drew - Daughter of Mary and Fred Drew, married Raymond Wright at Agawam, Massachusetts in 1966. They have three children - Coleen born 1968; Kelly Ann born 1970; Michael born 1972. The Wrights live in Agawam, Massachusetts. ### (children of Esther and Robert Beador) (1) Elizabeth Ann Beador - daughter of Esther and Robert Meador, married Edward T. Budil in 1962 in Tacoma, Washington. They have two children: Cynthia Drew born 1963 and Kristopher T. born 1965. They live in Tacoma. (2) Robert J. Beador - son of Esther and Robert Beador, married Julie Mcheau in 1970. No issue. They live in Tacoma Washington. ### (children of Jane and Harthon Bill) (1) Harthon Haines Bill - son of Jane and Harthon Bill, married Paula Lohr at Tacoma, Washington in 1969. They have one child, Katherine born 1971. They live in Aberdeen, Washington. ### (children of Russell and Helen Bill) (1) Susan Bill - daughter of Russell and Helen Bill married Robert Shepherd. They have two children. (2) Melamne Bill - daughter of Russell and Helen Bill, married Steven Gagerwski. They have two children. ### (children of Harry Bill) (1) Barbara Bill - daughter of Jane Cobb and Harry Bill. Married ? They have one child ? Live in Norfolk, Virginia. (2) Bonita Bill - daughter of Jane & Harry Bill Jr. Unmarried and lives in Norfolk, Virginia. (3) Elizabeth Bill - daughter of Nancy Flynn and Harry Bill Jr. Unmarried and lives in Rochester, New York. ### (children of Eben and Louise Rice) (1) Cynthia Rice - daughter of Eben and Louise Rice.
