The diaries begin in 1926, where a nearly 50-year-old Vernon is a successful and engaged member of the community of New Haven, CT. He owns and operates the stores of H.M. Hodges & Brother, a paint, wallpaper, and picture business with his older brother Harley Middleton Hodges. He is an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church, the New Haven Grays Veterans Association, and the New Haven Rotary Club. Since 1899, Vernon has been married to Theresa Peck (T.P.H.), my great-great-grandmother. The two have a daughter, Sarah "Sally" Vernon Hodges, my great-grandmother, who is in her early 20s when the diaries start. Sally is an actress studying in New York City at this time. Their first daughter, Doris Hodges, sadly passed away in 1907. The diaries were in the possession of my grandfather, Peter Hodges, until my father, Jonathan Hodges, took possession of them (though I do not know when). When my dad passed away in 2017, I took them with the intention of transcribing them into a digital format and share it with the rest of the family and Vernon's descendants (my aunts, cousins, and sister).
