Saturday July 10
Fearfully hot today. Thermometer at Church and Chapel Street registered 98° at three o'clock. We closed the store at one o'clock but after lunch at home. I went back to the office to finish checking up some Wall Paper bills. Four deaths occurred in the State on account of the heat. Lightning struck munition warehouse near Dover, New Jersey and killed seventy five men, mostly soldiers and marines on duty there.
