Dear Vernon:-
I am sorry to say that it is impossible for me to be a candidate for any office in Rotary or anywhere else. And now my dear Vernon I want to tell you that I thought your speech on Sunday was a master-piece; it was perfectly beautiful. It was not only tremendously effective in its sincerity, but it was a work perfect in art and taste, and I am proud of you.
Affectionately yours,
Billy

(Letter from William Lyon Phelps, professor at Yale. Vernon was previously asked to take an office in rotary on 3/25/1927 and it seems like Vernon then asked William for the same role. The Sunday speech is likely referring to Vernon reading the psalms on 4/3/1927, as William is also a deacon at Calvary.)
