Wednesday, August 3, 1927 The whole nation was astonished this morning when it opened its morning newspaper to read an announcement from President Coolidge saying in a single sentence, "I do not choose to run in 1928", which all take to mean that he is not a candidate for the Republican nomination for president. It was just four years ago yesterday since President Harding died and Calvin Coolidge became president. When this term is over, he will have served five years and seven months, so that a re-election at this time would take him over the prescribed eight years. Some think he will accept the nomination if pressed. Some say not. Time will tell.
