Friday, July 29, 1927 Very hot today. Thermometer 94° at Church and Chapel Street at noon. Drove over to Niantic to visit the New Haven Grays in camp. On the way over, went down to Black Point and called on George Hanbury, who is spending his vacation there. Arrived at Niantic camp grounds just ahead of a terrific thunder shower. Cleared off in time for retreat and regimental review by the 102nd Inf. Col. Louis Field in command. They made a fine appearance. About 50 of the veteran Grays went down to hold the annual meeting of the veterans association. The veterans had mess with the actives and while eating, another heavy shower came up that flooded the camp grounds. After waiting for the terrific thunder and the noise of the rain on the roof to subside somewhat, the annual meeting was held. President Carl F. Ballmann presided.
