She had arrived at the mouth of the Potomac River last night and had waited till morning to proceed up the river to the navy yard and to Washington to receive the greatest welcome any American has even been accorded in our history. His mother, Mrs. Evangeline Lodge Lindbergh, was at the navy yard to meet him. President Coolidge met him at the Washington Monument and presented him with the Distinguished Flying Cross.
