Sunday, October 2, 1927 Again a swelting day, most unseasonable. Started for Chicago this morning to attend the annual meeting of the National Wall Paper Wholesalers Assn. T.P.H. and Sarah brought me to Springfield in the Packard, which was far more enjoyable than riding up in the train this hot day. Came west over the N.Y. Central Lines on their train call "The North Shore Invited". Had mid-day meal on the train as we were climbing through the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. The foliage is turning after an early frost and is most gorgeous, with plenty of green yet to set it off. Had as a table companion a charming young Miss. Our table conversation was quite a-la Cal. Coolidge. I passed her the sugar and she said "Thank yow". By far too hot to enjoy the trip.
