Rotary luncheon at noon at the Hotel Taft. Frank H. Beede, superintendent of the public schools, spoke on the foreign children in our schools. He told us that there were 35,000 children enrolled, made up of 10,000 Americans, 12,500 Italians, 4,000 Russians, 1,200 Poles, the balance made up of all nations. In classifying these children, for instance the children called Italian were only those born to foreign born parents. All children born of parents born in this country are called American. Went to the Shubert Theatre with T.P.H. and Sarah to see George Arliss play the "Merchant of Venice" and it was marvelous. I never saw it better. Hope Carey played Jessica. She was a classmate of Sarah's at Pine Manor. We went on to the stage after the show and took Hope to the Taft for supper.
