The glorious Fourth and the 152nd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We are at Newfane Inn, Newfane, Vermont. A lovely old inn in a quaint old New England village. The merrie villagers celebrated the Fourth at midnight with the ringing of the church bell and the firing of cannon and giant fire crackers. We had breakfast here, paid our score, and drove back to Camp Arden, called for Sally, and went over to the new "Elm Leigh" at Putney, Vermont. Drove from there straight to Brattleboro and home (Sarah returned to camp with Miss Whitney). Stopped in Greenfield, Mass. for dinner at the Hotel Weldon (lovely meal). Ran into two hard showers on the way home. The worst at Mt. Carmel, where the roads were under water. Arrived home safely and enjoyed the Spring Glen fireworks at night. Dorothy is to stay with us for a few days.
