Cloudy, showery, and some sunshine. This was the day of Mayor "Ben" Towers funeral and a great tribute the people of New Haven paid to him. The body lay in state in City Hall from 10 to 1-30. Then we bore it to the Westville Cong. Church. Only those holding cards were admitted to the church. The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Newton, pastor of the church, and Dr. Watson J. Phillips, chaplain of the Hiram Lodge of Masons. The active bearers were members of the New Haven Grays - Ted Craff, Carl Ballmann, Jack Dyer, Fred Page, Harry Bowman, Harold Blakeslee, John Alden, and myself. There were 120 honorary bearers made up of men from all walks of life - Senator Hiram Bingham, Congressman John L. Tilson, Lt. Gov. Brainerd, etc, etc and so we laid him to rest in Westville Cemetary. A loving true man and friend and who among us will be the next to go?
