Tuesday, November 6, 1928 This is Election Day. T.P.H., Sarah, and I voted together at the Fire Engine House on Putnam St., Whitneyville, town of Hamden. Sarah got a great thrill out of it, this being her first vote and having the opportunity to cast it for Mr. Hoover as she knows Mrs. Hoover very well. Great throngs were at the polls all day and all over the Country. I had dinner down town tonight and then went to the Quinnipiack Club for the returns. The returns from the larger cities in Connecticut (and (New York City) all went for Smith and things began to look bad for Hoover. But when the smaller towns and the West were heard from, then the landslide for Hoover began. He finally gained 444 electoral votes out of 531. Smith won 87. Hoover finally carried the state of New York, Smith's own state. He won from the Democratic South North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, West Virginia, and Tennessee. --- ([Newspaper clipping](<Popular Vote for President - 1928.md>) for the exact numbers was included on this page.)
