Wednesday, November 7, 1928 The Nation is jubilant today over the election of Mr. Hoover for president. He won the election by being given a greater number of electoral votes than was ever given any other candidate. He broke the Democratic "Solid South" by carrying states that had not gone Republican since the Civil War. The South resented Smith, the Democratic candidate, on the grounds of his being a Catholic and a "Wet". The Prohibition Enforcement Act had a lot to do with Smith's defeat. We are raising our Community Chest Budget - $609,000.00. I spoke at the plant of the Wine Machinery Corp. over in Fair Haven. T.P.H. and I drove over to Derby, Conn. tonight to a "Ladies Night" of the Rotary Clubs of that section. Rev. Elmore McKee of Battell Chapel, Yale University was the able speaker.
