Friday, January 18, 1929 My fifty-third birthday and another milestone passed. But also another opportunity granted to start out on the stretch ahead. Hope always runs high at the start of a journey. My sincere hope is that I may finish it, all to the success of my family and friends. It has been a happy day. I received many greetings from dear friends, also letters from Aunt Marie, Alice Drew Lockwood, and Little Lucy (I have missed Aunt Lucy's letter this year). I had a telegram from Richmond up at Burlington, Vermont, a lovely card from Violette, and many other cards from my friends. Harley gave me a new shirt. Sally the book "England Beautiful" by Wallace Nutting. Violette, the book "John Brown's Body" and Tess, the book "The Angel That Troubled the Waters" by Thornton Wilder. The "family" at 100 Howe Street gave me a surprise birthday dinner. So fine of them. It made me very happy.
