Monday, July 1, 1929 A beautiful morning, clear and cool as a Vermont morning. We got up early and I drove up to Hartford to open the District Conference of Rotary International. I took office as District Governor today and this is my first official appearance. We held three sessions, morning, afternoon, and evening with a dinner at 6-30. 42 clubs were represented out of the 45 and we had a most helpful assembly. We had lunch at noon with the Hartford Club and they had a fine meeting. Frank Beveridge, retiring president, passed the gavel over to Frank Haggard, the incoming president. They both made fine speaches. I was introduced as the speaker of the day and gave them a short talk on the year ahead. Every past District Governor was present with the exception of Don Adams, who was on his way to Chicago to attend a Rotary Committee Meeting.
