Saturday, September 21, 1929 Very cold again. Thermometer 38° but no frost out here all though some localities had light frosts. We closed the store at one o'clock although Mrs. Wood and I worked till 5 o'clock. Sally called for me and we went down to the station to meet Bert and Jess Hodges, who came in from New York. We took them out home for dinner and the night. It is Bert's birthday today so Tess made a cake for him and put candles on it and everything. He was much pleased. We had a nice visit all together tonight. The New Haven Lawn Club House on Whitney Ave. burned to the ground this afternoon. Lack of water force was somewhat responsible. The Corner Stone of the new New Haven County Historical Society Building on Whitney Avenue held their cornerstone laying exercises today. Burton Mausfield and John L. Gilson were the speakers.
