Friday, May 8, 1931 Pouring rain all day long. Tessie and stayed at the Taft last night with the other District Governors and their wives. We all had breakfast together then separated for various events. The men to open the first session of the conference. Paul Kieser was nominated for District Governor by acclamation, there being no other candidate. "Billy" Phelps spoke on "Friendship". His was just wonderful. Luncheon in the Gill Room. Address Dr. Henry Crane, afternoon session. Then the big dinner tonight in the Ball Room. I made the presentation of the District gift to Dick Dodge, a sterling silver tea service. Floyd Newton presented an electric clock to Clinton Anderson. Tom Skyhill was the speaker on "Mussolini and Black Shirts". The Kiesers and the Gunns spent the night with us.
