Thursday, June 30, 1932 Very hot again today. Thermometer up among the 90s. The Democratic Convention on in full swing began nominations tonight. Roosevelt of New York looks to have the lead. Alfred E. Smith fighting hard for himself. Tessie and I drove over to East River and had supper with Larry and Aletha Stone. It was Mrs. Knapp's birthday. It was nice and cool on the beach. People are most uneasy over the bank situation in New Haven. The First National has taken over the assets of the Merchants National and the Tradesmens did not open yesterday. The only commercial banks open now are the First and Second National, the New Haven Bank, and the Union and New Haven Trust Co., and the little American Bank over in Fair Haven, corner of Grand Ave. and Ferry Streets. Peter came down from Stockbridge for the night.
