Monday, December 5, 1932 Another fine day. Quite mild. Very clear. Congress convened today in Washington. John Garner of Texas, Vice President Elect and Speaker of the House, introduced a bill to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment. It was defeated, lacking six votes of the necessary two thirds of those present and voting to carry. Many Southern Democrats voted against the bill. The measure will now have to go over ot the next session of Congress, which may be a special session called after the inauguration of Roosevelt and Garner on March fourth. I had supper down town tonight then went over to the Taft to a Rotary School by the New Haven Club. Harley was chairman. The attendance of New Haven members was small, owing no doubt to the fact that Newton D. Baker was speaking at Woolsey Hall and the University Glee Club was holding a smoker at the Lawn Club. We had men from neighboring clubs.
